ABSTRACT | 1 in 5 of the population has a learning difference. One of these differences is dyslexia. Many people still don’t know what it means to be dyslexic and think it is a disability. They believe that when a child is diagnosed with dyslexia, it is a death sentence regarding their education and future success. Dyslexic children do learn differently and these differences may lead to developing other abilities such as, conceptual, cognitive and spatial abilities.
With the growth of the technological industry, conceptual, cognitive and spatial abilities are more sought out. However, there is still stigma toward dyslexics and lack of awareness of what dyslexia actually means for adults. As dyslexics get older, awareness of their ‘disability’ (or ability in this case), is virtually nonexistent, therefore there is a need to raise general awareness of the strengths of dyslexics within the adult workforce.
Raising awareness regarding the positive abilities within dyslexic adults will ultimately benefit our society within the workplace.
PROCESS | I wanted to focus on the positive aspects of dyslexia, by raising awareness for dyslexic adults, their abilities and their success in the workplace. By breaking down letterforms to veer toward abstract shapes, the campaign shows how dyslexics think ‘beyond letters’. Dyslexia doesn’t mean failure and I wanted to call attention to the beauty of the dyslexic mind. You can see the progression of my process here.
SOLUTION | I wanted to show the progression of how the letters became a bit more broken down. As you can see, these letterforms make it easier to break apart the word dyslexia, to play with them spatially This break down also shows the figurative aspects of type within the poster. I’m emphasizing the form because they can be used as a symbolic language. This symbolism says that dyslexia is more than letters, thus interrogating the space between text and image.
